Happy Trails

The big news here in piddix land is that Brian (my significant other and better half) was laid off from his non-profit job of the last 4+ years last week. After much cursing and crying, my next thought was....so where should we move?

See, I'm one of those strange people who actually likes moving. I love the process of cleaning things out, boxing up what's left, and exploring a new city. For graduate school, Brian and I packed everything we owned into my tiny Honda hatchback and drove cross country to New York City--neither one of us ever having stepped foot on the East Coast before. Three years later we sold just about everything we had accumulated and bought one-way tickets back to Portland, where we've been for the past 10 years.

Since the sun (still) hasn't made a appreance in Portland much this summer I've been contimplating sunnier lands. And as Declan isn't in school yet, and I can work from anywhere with an internet connection, why not explore for a couple of years? While there's about a 2% chance that we will actually sell the house, pack things up, and make the big leap, I do love the idea of it all.

My current dream locations include:

Malta -- Stay a couple months with my sister and her husband.
Paris -- Brian's been working with a French/Austrian art group on a TV pilot.
Bay Area -- Always lovely, though expensive.
Hawaii -- Sigh. I love Hawaii. Why not?

I'd love to go somewhere sunny, laid back, and friendly. Am I crazy? Probably. But still, the the possibility of change is always a fun one for me.

Go Go GO!! you will never have a chance to do it again once the wee one is in school! I vote for Paris. Think of the day trips you could take just from there alone! Besides, Paris in the winter? Think of the inspiration!!! Ahhhh.... i want to go too!

Sounds wonderful! Why not visit your fans in So California? LOL We'd LOVE to have you!
It's funny because I will actually be in Portland in early Sept - first time there too.

Sunny and friendly? Malta. For sure. But you and Declan would be very cute going for walks in those fabulous Parisian parks.

Actually, you two are cute anywhere go. He's so handsome!

If you can swing it I say go! You never know what life will throw at you, do it while you have an opportunity. Like you said, you can work anywhere there's a computer.

Seems like Paris is quite popular. I've never been. I do love parks, and food, and antiques, and walking, and....

Maybe Paris in the Spring and Hawaii in the winter. Now I just need to convince Brian how fun this all will be (easier said than done).

so sorry to hear of the job loss - we've been there! opportunities present themselves in many unexpected ways :)
our son was just in paris - thought it would be a wonderful place to live for a couple of years and the ability to travel and live in a different culture with a new language with your family would be terrific.
keep us posted!

I do feel like there's some bigger plan going on that I just can't quite see yet. That's the only way I'm staying as optimistic as it seems. As I was saying to someone else today, I'm good with change, but I need to work on my patience. I'd love to know exactly what we'll be doing six months from now, but I'll have to wait and see.
